Making An Impact

  • Dear Ian I am finding it very hard to put into words the impact your presentation had on me personally. You have really inspired me to really go for my dreams and make it happen. Everyone I spoke to said similar things. To summarise the audience view - we have never heard a more inspiring story nor a better speaker.

At 24, I was written off as too old, having not raced internationally since a mediocre junior career six years earlier. The selection committee and national coaches dismissed me, but I had a vision, a plan, and support from friends, family, and a great coach.

Just nine months later, I became the fastest man in the country, representing Great Britain at the Senior World Championships in two separate events. The hunt for Olympic success and the realisation of a childhood dream had begun.

A dream which almost came undone during the 2004 Athens Olympics, when a freak accident threatened to prevent me from racing in my Olympic final.

Hear the remarkable story of how mental preparation, learning to love adversity and a desire to overcome setbacks helped me face down the biggest challenge of my sporting life.

Learn about embracing a long-term vision, preparing smarter not harder, and how to develop a personal mental protection plan.

Combined with the latest scientific understanding of stress management, these strategies can help you create the optimal mental and physical state when the pressure is really on
